Job Description

Protective Security Officers are responsible for the protection, safeguarding and security of assets, personnel, customers and visitors to a federal facility.  Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Patrol federal government premises to prevent and detect signs of intrusion and ensure security of doors, windows, and gates.
  2. Answer alarms and investigate disturbances.
  3. Monitor and authorize entrance and departure of employees, visitors, and other persons to guard against theft and maintain security of premises.
  4. Operate detecting devices to screen individuals and prevent passage of prohibited articles into restricted areas.
  5. Protecting property from theft, embezzlement, sabotage, fire and accidents.
  6. Investigating and writing reports on daily activities, accidents, incidents, suspicious activities, safety and fire hazards and other security related situations.
  7. Call police or fire departments in cases of emergency, such as fire or presence of unauthorized persons.
  8. Circulate among visitors, patrons, or employees to preserve order and protect property.
  9. Providing any needed assistance to customers, employees and visitors following established procedures.
  10. May perform other related duties as assigned by a supervisor and or the Project Manager.
Job Requirements

Successful applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

  • At least 21 years of age.  
  • United States citizen, OR
  • Lawful Permanent Resident who is currently a member of, or who possesses a verifiable honorable discharge from, any component of the United States Armed Forces.
  • High School diploma or GED
  • At least 2 years of armed security or law enforcement experience, OR
  • At least 2 years of honorable service as a member of any U.S. Armed Forces component, OR
  • A minimum of 60 credit hours, in a related field, OR
  • Successful completion of a federal/state certified law enforcement education program that resulted in a law enforcement appointment.
  • Fluently speak, read, comprehend, and compose coherent written reports in English.
  • Possess a current FPS Suitability Adjudication.
  • Possess a current VA DCJS (Armed) license.
  • Able to pass required medical, fitness, and drug testing.
  • Able to pass criminal background and credit checks.
  • Able to successfully qualify with a firearm.

Applicants with the following training will be strongly preferred:

  • FPS 64-hour Basic Training
  • FPS 40-hour Firearms Training
  • FPS 40-hour Refresher Training
  • DHS NWDTP Training
